What is a Sextortion Crime?

Definition

Sextortion is a crime in which a male victim is lured into a video chat on a social media platform, online random chat, etc.,
where his sexual activity is recorded. A list of the victim’s acquaintances is then obtained by hacking his mobile phone or
using friends lists on his social media accounts, and the victim is blackmailed with the threat of sharing the recordings with his close acquaintances.

Crime Methods

  • APK Method

A method of hacking the victim’s mobile phone before or
immediately after a video call to steal the victim’s contacts
and distribute the video to people in the contacts.

  • iCloud Method

A method of targeting iPhone users and collecting their
iCloud details to steal their contacts and distribute the video
    to people in the contacts.

  • Method using Instagram

A method of approaching the victim on Instagram,
recording a video chat with the victim, and
distributing the video to the victim’s Instagram followers.
Hacking is not involved in this method and in most cases,
to avoid being blocked by Instagram, the perpetrators
upload the video on YouTube or another web platform and
distribute the video link instead of sending the video via
    direct messages.

  • Foreign Account and English Method

A method used frequently on Facebook, Instagram, and Tinder.
The perpetrators speak fluent English and their distribution targets
are usually the victim’s social media friends. In most cases,
bank accounts in the Philippines are used to receive money via
    Western Union.
